The Master Plan

The goal was set at 20 quilts FROM THE PARADE.  There are roughly 80 quilts in the parade, so finishing 20 is a quarter of them.  During baseball season and the fall, I can barely think keeping up with the family schedule, so my plan will be based on 10 months.  That is roughly 2 quilts from the list per month.

It's January and what have I accomplished - absolutely nothing.

January's Goals:

  1. Finish Spicy Spiral in Valentine's colors
  2. Add Borders to my Twister Quilt and Piece the backing
  3. 10 FW blocks and post the tutorials online
  4. Put the borders on the flannel quilt and piece the backing
  5. Move one project to a new home.
I better quit blogging and get busy with my goals.

UFO Parade - Grand Finale

I was beginning to wonder if I was ever going to get to the end of the UFO containers.  As crazy as it may seem, I do not feel overwhelmed.  You may wonder how my UFOs reached epic proportions.  Teaching classes has multiplied my unfinished projects.  Since my time is limited at this stage of my life, I often set class samples to the side to work on the next class samples.  I am very curious about new techniques, and I tend to have lots of new starts because of this.

Isn't this blue sashing on this panel obnoxious?  I have yards and yards of it.

I bought this to practice outline quilting, but I never go the top together.

I think it is rather amazing how it looks when you eliminate the electric blue.  I have changed the colors in my bedroom since I started this, but I still intend to finish it.

Since I am on the topic of bed quilts, The quilt at the left was also started for my bed.  I posted about it on my blog here.  It just needs borders.

I recently put the rows together on this quilt
It took a lot of work to get it together!  I had to do a lot of re-work.  I have learned a lot from teaching classes.  There is a lot of crookedness with this quilt and lots of lumpy seams.  I didn't stress too much when I joined the rows about things lining up perfectly.  It is old and I have improved my cutting and piecing since I started it.

I did learn with the these 2 quilts that I can accomplish quite a bit by pinning at night or in the car.  This put a little fire in my desire to get things finished.

I dug this project out before Christmas to get it put together.  I ran into a little problem with my pressing direction, so I began taking things apart.  I have reached the put back together stage!  Hurray!  I have tons and tons of these 4 patches.  I am not even going to count them.  I think I might have had a little math problem when I was calculating how many I needed.

This makes 4 quilts that I started for my bed and none of them were finished.  I am hesitant to start a new quilt for my bedroom with my new color scheme.  I have the pattern picked and the fabrics purchased, but I haven't cut into them yet.

This flannel quilt was in pieces last month, so I am pleased that I won't be boxing the pieces up again.  I decided to add a few borders to it so it would be a little larger.  The borders are cut, so I think I can get this accomplished in the next few months.

I debated about this project at the end of last year also.  I had the blocks all completed, but I wasn't crazy about them.  I am not real crazy about the pattern, but I decided to go ahead and finish it.  I like it better now that I have the blocks together.  I am down to the borders on this one.

I lost count how many times I put this quilt away.  I decided to piece my border differently.  I put it away when I was unsuccessful.  When I pulled it out the second time, I was successful with my piecing, but the instructions were incorrect.  This is not at the top of my list to finish this year.  I may just decide to move this one to a new home.

Fon's and Porter Americana Sampler.  This quilt is almost in one piece.  It is a mystery why I didn't go ahead and put it together.  The applique and paper piecing are already done, so I am out of excuses on this one.

This was colorway number one of the Sampler class I taught.  It is properly aged, so I need to at least get blocks together this year.

Colorway number 2.  I don't  have as many blocks of this one.  It too is properly aged, so I really need to do something with it.

Another set of sampler blocks in reproduction colors from a quilt class.  There are plenty of blocks here to make a quilt.

Just 4 blocks in these colors.  I used these to demonstrate so I didn't get so many blocks in the Christmas colorways.

Any ideas on what to do with these?  They finish at 12".  Table runner?

This is Roll, Roll Cotton bowl from Bonnie Hunter.  I kept up with all the piecing when the mystery was going on, but I haven't had time to put the pieces together.

This is another Bonnie Hunter pattern.  I didn't do this one as a mystery.  This one came about when I found a whole container of 2" finished half squares.  Her pattern takes 1 1/2" finished half squares, so I enlarged all the pieces.  This UFO isn't very old.

This was a Bonnie mystery from long ago.  It was the first mystery that she did online.  I was crazy and started 2 of them.  I finished one, but this one has been in the box for a number of years.  Everything is done except the setting triangles.

These blocks were put together as leader/enders a few years ago.

This container was gifted to me from a friend.  She was ready to be done with her spare pieces.  I need to make a few more, and I will have enough for a nice size quilt.

This is my current class project and I am enjoying it.  It is from the book Farmer's wife.  I have lots of tutorials on my blog if you are interested in joining in.  I have another one started in softer colors.  I am still motivated to work on both of these this year.

This is the end of the parade.  I hope you have enjoyed the big reveal.  I am hoping this will give me the motivation to finish some of the projects that have been sitting too long.  Perhaps my massive amount will make you feel better about the few projects you have that aren't completed.  It may just scare you into completing them so you don't end up like me.

Just to Recap the parade:

Part 1 = 12 Projects
Part 2 = 14 Projects
Part 3 = 35 Projects
Part 4 = 18 Projects

If my math is correct, that is a whopping 79 projects!  I did not hit triple digits.

Now comes the hard part - developing a plan to reduce.  I plan to update my spreadsheet based on my photo journal.

UFO Parade Part 3

This will be the most revealing of the UFO parade.  Wow!  I knew I had all these projects, but somehow they seemed smaller when they were folded up in the drawers.  I would rather not date these projects because they are some of my oldest UFOs.  Many of these are class samples.

  1. Snowman table topper
  2. 2 More Snowmen table toppers
  3. 2 winter Banners
  4. Winter wall hanging from a beginner class that I taught

  1. Mystery sampler from long ago at a retreat
  2. (top right) Ugly fabric table topper challenge
  3. (middle right) Strippy baby quilt
  4. (bottom Left) Crazy Stars - King Size
  5. (bottom right) pastel log cabin baby quilt

Stories:  #1 - I had a quilting plan but I didn't feel confident to execute it so I packed it away, #4 - I thought it needed borders...Why??, #5 I didn't like it so I never finished it.

  1. Fall Banner
  2. Spring Banner
  3. Summer Banner
These were all class samples.

  1. Ugly block challenge.  Some of these are actually fun, and it was a great learning tool.
  2. Stiles and path blocks....and lots of them.
  3. Applique wall hanging- love the colors, love the pattern, no desire to finish the applique
  4. Holiday topper - missing the applique.  Does it really need it?  I think not - finish and gift to a non-sewer as they won't notice how uneven it is ;-)

  1. My quilt group bought me this vintage top for Christmas
  2. A special friend made me this king size tumbler quilt - pieced by hand.  I want to add a few borders so it covers the mattress
  3. Bonnie Hunter Pattern- Virginia Bound.  Let's just say I like paper piecing LESS than applique.  These few blocks were enough for me.

  1. Christmas Tree Skirt  - Will have to do some serious thinking on what the pattern is.  As I look at the pile of blocks, I am wondering what I was thinking with the colors.  Perhaps when I lay them out I won't be thinking about the trash.  I think it makes a hexagon, but I will have to think some more on it.
  2. Table topper that I was trying the technique.  I was tired of it when I had to repress and arrange the pieces.  Let me clarify that I didn't read the directions well and that is why I had to re-press them
  3. Super easy Runner that I was testing.  Thank goodness my helper is only counting the soldiers and not my projects.

Fall Wall hanging- I actually took this apart a few years ago because I didn't like the small pumpkin color.  I replaced it with the more muted color.  I like this project.  I am not sure why I never finished it.

  1.  More class projects - A fall and spring runner
  2. Simple striped runner
  3. Snowman wall hanging done with Chenille - another applique
  4. Patches and pinwheels- needs a border (even my helper has grown weary of the photo shoot)
  5. Bow Ties -  This is my oldest UFO.  It needed one more border.  I should have done that when I had the plan straight in my head

  1. I think this was going to be a wall quilt in the TV room- good news...It still matches. (Top left)
  2. These are different blocks than number 1, but the same fabric. (Top right)
  3. Duplicate (bottom left)....
  4. Pile of 25 patch blocks - alias bingo squares
  5. Spring Runner
I hope I captured them all - Yes, 35 UFOs in this post alone.  On the bright side, lots of these projects are small in size and they shouldn't take long to quilt and finish.

I am not finished.  Stop back on Sunday for part 4  where I reveal the balance and the grand total.  I decided that I would not count the projects that I have cut out but not started.

My kids often ask me- What are you going to do with all these when you finish them.  Do any of you worry about that?

If you have any questions about my projects or where I got the patterns, just leave me a comment.  I love to hear from my readers!!

A Great Find

Thursday is my Salvation Army browsing day.  My children think I am a little crazy, but they have benefited from some of the items we have up-cycled.  Well, I was just delighted with my find last night.  It is not quilt related at all, but I thought I would post about it because it was exciting to me.  The cost of $2.95.

Do you know what this is?  Do you have one in your cupboard?  My husband had no idea what one of these were when we got married, but I told him I couldn't live without it.

This is exactly like the one my grandmother and my mother had...and it was made in Canada!  Somehow the cord wasn't with it, but that didn't stop me.  A trip to the hardware, and another $2.95, and presto....Beautiful hard boiled eggs!!

I hope you enjoyed my crazy post.  I would love to know if you knew what this was, and if you have one sitting in your own cupboard.

UFO Parade - Part 1

This is sort of embarrassing!  Perhaps this is what I need get me going.  Showing you everything I have stuffed away is sort of like parading through the street with no clothes on .  Part 1 of this parade is the projects that I have ready to quilt including the backing is made.

  1. Apple wall quilt that I used as a sample for a beginner class a few years ago
  2. Spicy Spiral table runners - class sample 2012
  3. Plus Scrap quilt - Started 2012
  4. Coins Quilt - Started 2012
  5. Jacob Ladder quilt - 2005?  - this is the very first scrap quilt I ever made.  I put the borders on it in 2012
  6. Crazy Star Baby quilt - blocks are from many years ago - added the borders in 2012
  7. Christmas Take 5
  8. Hopscotch - put together in 2012
  9. Pastel lap quilt - very old!  I found the binding fabric, so I decided to go ahead and finish this
  10. Halloween hourglass.  Made these as leader and enders in 2012.
  11. Charm stars - put this together right before Christmas 2012
  12. Halloween Take 5 with sashing
How many of these do you think will still be on the list in 2013?  (Please don't answer that)  This is the tip of the project list.  Just one tote worth

New Year = New Goals

Sorry for my lack of blogging, but I have been having difficulty keeping up with everything that is going on. I am sad to say that I went the whole Christmas vacation without turning on a sewing machine. I am having considerable sewing withdraw! At the beginning of the year, I always like to look back at what I accomplished the previous year and set some new quilting goals.  I finished quite a few things last year, but almost half of them were not on the UFO spreadsheet that I maintain.  This is a good/bad news thing.  I didn't create more UFOs, but I also didn't reduce my number by much.  I hope to remedy that this year.  I am taking a picture of ALL my UFOs as of January 1.  I hope this will be the kick start I need to get going on some of them.

These are some of my sewing goals for this year

  1. Finish 20 quilts/wall hangings from the UFO parade (parade will be starting later today)
  2. Finish the tutorials on the FW blocks & substitutions ;-)
  3. Improve my photography skills so my blogging pictures are more exciting
  4. Limit my purchases enough so that all the fabric I have will fit on my shelves  (backings for 20 quilts should help with this don't you think?)
I hope everyone had a delightful Christmas and Happy New year.

I leave you with a picture of my simple tree this year.  I love that this tree takes about 5 minutes to put up, and 5 minutes to decorate.
